Lecture 7 - The Black Box Reflection

Erika Kruger's project "The Black Box, The Concealed Room" captivates aspects of The Shadow within a spectrum of perspectives, where Book 5: "Shadow in Repetition" presents different axonometric outlooks of a proposed art gallery. This slide highlights the idea of structural repetition where components have been integrated along an extent of a wall section (on the left) in that the casting of a light source from above, creates a sense of correlation between the physical objects and their "lively" shadows. A narrowed snapshot of the complex (on the right), depicts the consequence of lighting through negative prisms carved out of a stretch of repetitive structural features.

In modification to my work, I plan to develop terrestrial pillars to depict a distinctive landform that emphasises the idea of repetition, in that the effects of lighting and shadow poses a significant perspective upon a structure consisting solid blocks and negative prisms.

Client 1) NICOLE KUEPPER

Nicole Kuepper, a 23-year-old PhD student from UNSW's School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering, has developed photovoltaic (solar) technology involving a simple inkjet printing process. The work could bring electricity to 2 billion of the world's poorest people - and has already two prestigious Eureka Prizes for Nicole.

Quote: "And so we started thinking about simple process we can use such as low temperature firing conditions, inkjet printing because they are very simple and easy to understand. And we came up with basically a new way of making solar cells that is cheap, low-tech, low temperature and able to be done in some of the least developed countries."

Client 3) STEPHEN HAWKING

Sir Stephen William Hawking, (born 8 January 1942) is a British theoretical physicist, whose world-renowned scientific career spans over 40 years. Hawking's key scientific works to date have included providing, with Roger Penrose, theorems regarding singularities in the framework of general relativity, and the theoretical prediction that black holes should emit radiation, which is today known as hawking radiation.

DRAFT#1 SKETCH UP MODEL:

ABOVE: Curious

The emotion of curiosity is visually displayed in this section with the spiral stairs integrated with windows that attracts the person on the stairs to look out from. It poses as a physical manipulation of the spectator (i.e. artist, Goodwin) to be inspired by the Unknown (beyond the window).

BELOW: Foreigner

This is the attempt to demonstrate the idea of detachment, having separate studio and work rooms spaced out under the ground plane - having Piccinni to feel "foreign" to her surroundings, uncertain of where the other rooms are situated.

DRAFT#2 SKETCH UP MODEL:

ABOVE: Illuminating

The "illuminating" feature is presented by use of bright yellow and metal - as a reflective source from the sunlight. The shape of the section as pointed star segments contributes to this perspective.

BELOW: Interlocked

The hexagonal shapes connects the whole studio space with bricks used predominating to imply the "strength" of the nature of objects being "interlocked".

FINAL DEVELOPED SKETCH UP MODEL:

ABOVE: Curious

Developed from DRAFT#1 - modification with studio rooms. The space on the ABOVE section has been extended with curving of the walkways to "manipulate" the artist's mind. The use of wood being distorted in irregular shapes forms the roof and contributes to the "curious" atmosphere, as well as providing a connection to the gallery, also in wood.

Gallery - THE DATUM

a walkway has also been constructed to refer to Goodwin's section on the ABOVE plane, i.e. to direct spectators/visitors on only ONE route. The extensive use of wood is to to create a sense of unity between the two sections.

BELOW: Foreigner

The BELOW section has been extended to great lengths to highlight the "foreign" sensation, having tiles lining the surface of walkways and a distorted structure at the centre of the section - this feature is surrounded by a patterned translucent wall - acting as the "barrier" for the artist to see clearly.
